During years past, there were modular cabinets with better finishes but few options or there were small local custom shops with high flexibility but low quality finish.

Today, due to technology advances, the worlds of custom & modular cabinetry have come together.   Large  shops with millions spent on finish departments .....  are able to produce combined run custom cabinets that were previously impractical.  Designers are now able to communicate to far-away shops as if they were in the same building, and thus the world of cabinetry has changed.  Spectacular finishes are now available on full-custom cabinets, and large shops are beginning to dominate.

Conversion varnish finishes, when applied correctly, require doors laid horizontal, baked in ovens that heat up the molecules and leave hard and impregnable surfaces.   Unfortunately because of the expense, smaller shops are unable to do this, or are forced to use outside vendors which drives up the cost of the product.

Furthermore, as the cabinet business has grown more competitive, the high end showroom has gradually given way to small experienced designers working from low-cost home offices.   Better designers are able to flourish from reference work.   Using the "home office" system rather than expensive showroom,  it demands more experience from the designer because the jobs must be done efficiently to secure more reference work.  Those who fail lose their client source.
